MotiveWave Community Edition (CE) is free. WyckFlow studies install into CE. That combination still needs the right market data underneath — and “free data” is where most confusion starts. This article is product literacy: what Level 2 actually means for order flow, which studies need depth versus aggressor ticks, and how trial versus prop-firm feeds differ. It complements the install guide and the CE footprint setup; it does not replace them.
Bid/ask first: the language of aggression
Every serious order-flow chart answers: who was the aggressor?
- Trades that lift the ask are aggressive buys.
- Trades that hit the bid are aggressive sells.
Footprint cells, bar delta, CVD, and big-trade bubbles all depend on that classification. Without reliable bid/ask (or uptick/downtick) tagging from your data vendor, those studies cannot tell a coherent story. Saying “offer” instead of ask is just vocabulary noise — the market has a bid and an ask.
Futures on a centralised exchange (CME NQ, ES, CL, and so on) are the cleanest environment for this tape. Fragmented markets hide more volume off-exchange, so the same study looks noisier.
Depth (Level 2 / DOM): what it adds
Level 1 is top of book plus trades. Level 2 (market depth / DOM) shows size resting at multiple prices above and below.
You need depth when the study’s job is to visualise or infer resting liquidity:
| Study need | Typical data | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Aggressor volume per price | Bid/ask (or tick rule) trades | Volume Imprint, CVD, Delta, Big Trades |
| Resting book over time | Live Level 2 / DOM | Liquidity Heatmap, Iceberg Detector |
| Hybrid pressure gauges | Often both | Pressure Meter |
Depth has another practical property: it usually has no history. Heatmap and iceberg recordings start from the moment the study is live with a depth feed. Plan your session accordingly — you cannot scrub back a week of DOM that was never captured.
What “free” Level 2 usually means
WyckFlow’s public positioning matches how many futures traders actually start:
- Rithmic free trial (commonly ~14 days) or a repeatable AMP trial: Level 2 / DOM is typically included free for the trial window. That is enough to evaluate footprint + heatmap on CE without paying for depth yet.
- Prop-firm accounts (Rithmic / Tradovate and similar paths): live Level 2 / DOM is often a paid add-on — usually a small monthly fee for non-pro CME depth, billed by the firm or data vendor, not by MotiveWave and not by WyckFlow.
Exact dollar amounts change by firm and package. Do not treat any blog as a price list; check your firm’s data page. What stays stable is the shape of the product: trial depth free → funded/prop depth often add-on.
WyckFlow does not sell the data feed. We sell studies that run once your MotiveWave connection already delivers trades (and depth, when required).
What Community Edition can do
CE is enough platform for WyckFlow’s order-flow stack:
- Install the JAR, restart MotiveWave fully, add studies from the WyckFlow group (install walkthrough).
- Run footprint, CVD, delta, GEX, and — with depth — heatmap/iceberg.
- Use free forever studies (CVD + Bid/Ask Volume) even after paid trials end, still on CE.
You do not need a paid MotiveWave edition solely to host these studies. Edition comparisons matter for other MotiveWave features; order-flow add-ons are a separate decision (editions compared).
A practical “data readiness” checklist
- Confirm your broker/data connection inside MotiveWave shows the symbol you trade.
- Verify trades print with bid/ask classification (footprint or Bid/Ask study should populate both sides).
- If you want heatmap/iceberg, confirm Level 2 is subscribed and depth updates on the DOM.
- On a trial: note the end date; decide before it expires whether prop add-on depth is worth it for your process.
- On a prop account: check whether Level 2 is already included or must be enabled as an add-on.
- Remember depth history starts at activation — open the heatmap at the session start you care about.
Common misunderstandings
- “CE cannot do order flow.” CE can host the studies; missing depth or a misconfigured connection is the usual blocker, not the edition name.
- “WyckFlow includes free Level 2 forever.” Trials include depth for the trial window; ongoing prop depth is typically the firm’s add-on.
- “Footprint needs Level 2.” Footprint needs reliable aggressor tagging from trades. Heatmap needs depth. Different requirements.
- “I can replay full DOM history.” Not unless you recorded it. Depth is live-forward.
- Inventing credentials or “secret free feeds.” Use vendor trials and firm data menus only. No blog should invent logins or unofficial endpoints.
An honest note: good data does not make a strategy. It only makes the tape legible. Risk, sizing, and whether you should be trading at all remain your decisions.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need Level 2 for a footprint chart?
You need bid/ask (aggressor) trade data. Full multi-level DOM is required for heatmap/iceberg-style tools, not for every footprint use case.
Is Level 2 free on MotiveWave Community Edition?
MotiveWave CE does not bill you for CME depth. Your data vendor or prop firm does. Trials (Rithmic/AMP) commonly include Level 2 free for the trial; prop accounts often charge an add-on.
What can I run without paying for depth yet?
Aggressor-based studies — footprint, CVD, delta, big trades, GEX — once trades are classified. Add heatmap/iceberg when depth is active.
Does WyckFlow sell market data?
No. WyckFlow sells MotiveWave studies. Data comes from your broker, prop firm, or vendor trial.
Where do I go next for setup?
Install WyckFlow into MotiveWave, then Footprint on Community Edition. Study pages: Volume Imprint, Heatmap, CVD.
Product-literacy companion to the MotiveWave install and CE guides. Related studies: Volume Imprint, Liquidity Heatmap, Iceberg, Bid/Ask.
